On Monday 25th January, we celebrated Burns Night on Zoom as one of our ‘Funding the Future’ events. A year ago, something like this would not have even been thought possible. How far we have come with the modern technology!
On the night we had over 60 people join us for a night of entertainment, provided of course by the Scottish Brethren in our Church, for us Sassenachs.
Recipes provided by Peter Bradley were sent out for all those brave enough to catch, and taste Haggis for the first time. Of course people were perfectly entitled to eat a Pizza if they preferred!
We followed the guidelines of the traditional Burns Supper, with a few minor alterations, mainly the length of the individual poems of Burns!
Martin Duguid led us, both as Zoom host, and compere for the entertainment. A multi-task affair which he performed effortlessly.
The Selkirk Grace was recited by Iain Duncan, followed by the Giant Haggis being piped in and addressed by Dougie Macdonald, resplendent in a ginger wig, beard, and Tam o Shanter.
After our meal, Martin Duguid presented the Immortal Memory followed by Ken Wallace who proposed the Toast to the Lassies and Nancy Duncan replied on their behalf.
This was followed by entertainment provided by Iain and Nancy Duncan, Liz McGuire, Ronnie Dykstra , Martin Duguid and finishing with Ken Wallace on the accordion with a rendition of a selection of Burns’ songs. This most enjoyable evening ended with us singing Auld Lang Syne.
The ‘Funding the Future’ team would like to thank everyone who has donated most generously and helped us raise over £1,000 on this occasion.
